{"id":7472,"date":"2020-09-30T10:45:22","date_gmt":"2020-09-30T08:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panini.gbsweb.online\/blog\/volunteer-it-will-change-your-life\/"},"modified":"2024-02-19T18:15:08","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T17:15:08","slug":"volunteer-it-will-change-your-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panini.com\/it\/blog\/volunteer-it-will-change-your-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteer: it will change your life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the past month, I have been volunteering at my local animal shelter as a member of the dog walking team. I have a rescue dog myself, so this is my way of giving back and giving thanks for the amazing gift Harper (my dog) is to me. I\u2019m participating in something that\u2019s bigger than me \u2013 something that makes a huge difference in these dogs\u2019 lives, in my community, and, as it turns out, in my life as well. I had no idea how much being a volunteer at the shelter would change me.<\/p>\n<p>The Hamilton County (Cincinnati, OH) Animal Shelter was recently taken over by an organization called <a href=\"https:\/\/cincinnatianimalcare.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cincinnati Animal CARE<\/a>. They\u00a0<em>believe that every animal deserves a chance at a live outcome, should be treated as an individual, and that lifesaving is a community ethic<\/em>. Not what you\u2019d expect from an animal shelter? Me neither. But the difference they\u2019re making in the community \u2013 and especially for the animals in their care &#8211; is astonishing. And it works! They are a model for what all shelters can and should be. Their core values challenge the community to\u00a0<em><strong>expect more<\/strong><\/em> from our county animal shelter. And they have challenged me to expect more of myself.<\/p>\n<p>When I started volunteering at the shelter, my friends and family reacted with \u201cHow can you do that and not just cry?\u201d or \u201cHow can you not just want to take every dog home with you?\u201d The truth is, I can\u2019t! I often cry when I leave the shelter. As I share this story with you, I cry! And of course, I would love to bring every dog home with me, but that\u2019s not realistic, so I don\u2019t. (It is my retirement goal, however, but that\u2019s another story for another blog <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"smiley\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panini.com\/sites\/all\/libraries\/ckeditor\/plugins\/smiley\/images\/regular_smile.png\" alt=\"smiley\" width=\"23\" height=\"23\" \/>) I knew it would be difficult, but I chose to do it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>As Khalil Gibran said, <em>\u201cProgress is not in enhancing what is, but in advancing toward what will be.\u201d\u00a0<\/em> Which is exactly what we\u2019re doing on the dog walking team. We\u2019re not focusing on how sad it is that these dogs don\u2019t have a forever home; we\u2019re focusing on what we can do right now to help them in the situation that is, so they can make progress to be ready for what will be &#8211; their adoption day! And it\u2019s exactly what volunteering in the shelter has inspired in me, in my work, and in my daily interactions and challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m focused on not sweating the small stuff, it\u2019s all small stuff; and advancing toward what will be. Focusing on what I can do right now to inspire the desired results. Challenging myself to do more. Advancing every day toward what will be \u2013 eventual success! It\u2019s positive. It\u2019s life-changing. It\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n<p>I encourage you to volunteer.
